GRIT AND GREATNESSThis poster develops a bold visual system that unifies expressive color, texture, and typography to promote a museum exhibition about Ezzard Charles. Inspired by poster designs of the 1950’s, the piece uses layered forms and high-contrast type to evoke energy and movement, reflecting the impact and legacy of its subject. A clear typographic hierarchy organizes event details while guiding the viewer through the composition, balancing experimentation with readability. Through research and iterative exploration, the final poster communicates both the significance of Charles’s contributions and a compelling invitation to attend.

Process workThis project utilizes manually distressed typography to distort form and add texture. The final composition’s background is distressed by printing the words on standard paper and strategically ripping each letter. The words “Grit and Greatness” were distressed through folding the paper at each letter to make the letterforms appear stretched or compressed. Through experimentation with different methods, I chose these to symbolize Ezzard Charles’ record-breaking career and the resilience that defined it.
